The tragedy of King Lear is an abbreviated encyclopaedia of human
behaviour. The highest and lowest passions, the brightest passions of
love and the darkest passions of selfishness, all our hopes and all our
fears, our greatest dreams and our worst nightmares. All aspects of
human behaviour are reflected in the micro-cosmos Shakespeare created
in what many consider to be his most brilliant work.
Shakespeare had the ability to inherit and
anticipate everything, and in King Lear he did so more brilliantly than
in any other of his works, offering a collection of extraordinary
characters and some of the best scenes ever written for theatre: the
division of the kingdom, the storm, the mock trail of the King’s
cruel daughters, Gloucester’s jump off the cliff, the reunion
between Lear and Cordelia…
The National Drama Centre, with the
unparalleled level of artistic quality that characterises it, provides
us a new opportunity to enjoy one of the immortal plays of universal
theatre, offering us a version by Juan Mayorga, one of today’s
most prestigious theatre playwrights, under the direction of Gerardo
Vera, and a superb cast of actors, which will guarantee an
unforgettable night of the best theatre.
