Mecano was the most important group in the history of Spanish music. They sold over ten million records and won the hearts and voices of three generations. Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar is their musical. The play tells the story of two friends who live in a village in the early 80s. The two of them share the same dream: to travel to Madrid and form a band. Once there, they have to face incomprehension and rejection from the record companies and learn to live with no jobs and no money. They find love and discover drugs. The 1980s, a time of cultural and social flux, provides the setting in which they live, suffer, love, are happy, downtrodden… and eventually become the biggest group in Spain.
The production has an extraordinary cast of 40 artists: 13 actors and actresses who sing live on stage and play the characters in the story, 20 dancers and 7 musicians who perform the songs written by the Cano brothers. Since it first opened, over 1,200,000 audience members have met the production with rapturous applause. An understandable success because, after all, who hasn’t said at some point “I can’t face getting up today”, the meaning of Hoy no me puedo levantar.
