Gernika (Mihise gaineko dantza, Dance on Canvas) by the Aukeran Dance Company is the narration of the events of April 1937, told in the first person plural, or in other words, by those who suffered the bombardment. The proposal brings traditional and contemporary dance together and uses lighting and colour to create different atmospheres.
Those killed in the bombing are brought back to life to tell the tale. They talk about their life before the destruction, how the hell of the war was unleashed on their town, destroying it and how it can be revived through memory.

The Arriaga Theatre is closely linked to the city of Bilbao. Although Bilbao’s residents would attend theatrical performances before, the city had a place used solely for dramatic performances only in 1799. In that year, a group of neighbours commissioned the construction of a theatre on Ronda St.
Aukeran, which has visited the Arriaga Theatre with its shows, is a company directed by Edu Muruamendiaraz and located in San Sebastian, which has developed and staged shows with traditional dance roots since 1997. Breaking many of the rules and adding contemporary snippets to its choreographies, it succeeds in showing the wealth of traditional Basque dance beyond its limits and uses more refreshing and modern language. This is an innovative work on which no other company has worked so diligently.
