The Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ) was founded in 1990 by Masaaki Suzuki, its musical director, with a view to introducing Japanese audiences to performances of baroque masterpieces played on period instruments. As the name of the ensemble indicates, their main interest lies in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporary German composers, such as Buxtehude, Schütz, Schein and Böhm.
The BCJ comprises a baroque orchestra and choir, and its main activities include an annual series of Bach Cantatas, as well as a large number of instrumental programmes.
The director Masaaki Suzuki has gained an exceptional reputation, not only as an organ and clavicymbal soloist, but also as a conductor to the most renowned soloists and European ensembles.
